Oof. Dare I say, ouch. Poor Nagi.

I do kinda wonder what happened with the tutor. Obviously she was just playing with her, but presumably there's a reason she chose to ghost Nagi all of a sudden after she already put in the time investment to groom her. Did she just move or what? Get bored? Seems a bit late in the game to start getting scared of legal consequences, and I sincerely doubt it was crisis of conscience.

Anyway

I do. I love her. The perfect goober gyaru.

Yep, nothing more classic than a small statutory rape detour in the story. What a whiplash.

But don't worry, she has 15 years to report it, so I'm sure when the tutor shows up next time to interfere with the main couple, two nice officers will be waiting.

Considering how quickly Nagi moved through all the steps of the "fake" relationship, I think we can safely assume it wasn't her first time getting that far.
Depending on what year this is set, age of consent in Japan was raised from 13 to 16 in 2023. And that’s for heterosexuals, so who knows what the courts would do with a lesbian situation. :/

If the tutor was in HS, and she was a 3rd year middle school student, the most diff in age would be 3 years. All under 18. Many high achieving HS do tutoring as a part time job. Sensei is used even with other minors if the person is in a position of teaching. She had a crush on her tutor, and tutor took advantage of her. Even though no real crime, still scummy move.

The vibe I got from the tutor was she's around High School, don't know why but if she was older I feel like the author would comment on it or Nagi would mention something like the fact she's in college or has graduated.
Still Nagi is an idiot if she realised early on that Manatsu is very different from the tutor and still thought she's be able to get over Manatsu.

Dammit Nagi just fucking fall! There's absolutely no downside in falling in love with her pretend girlfriend and she knows gaddam well that the goof is already fallen for her as well! Why does she deny herself a happy ending to the otherwise bad memory of her first love!

LOL. This fricking irritates me cos it hits right in the feels a few times and I love this MC and want her to be happy. Hopefully we get to see how she takes her girl back next month

Most of the translation is okay. But I'd like to suggest some changes to the last panel of p20 and all of p21 except the last box on the left. I spent 2 weeks trawling Japanese literature and trying to get it sounding right in English.
This is closer to what Nagi was trying to say:

"What am I even doing? Hiding my true intentions, justifying to myself that it was reasonable I tried to take advantage of the situation."
Edit: It's not really easy to write the translation well in English. But it's not so much that Nagi needed to make up a plausible excuse to give to Manatsu. But instead it's that by her framing the fake dating as helping Manatsu, it makes what she is doing righteous/good thing even though she did try to advantage of the situation and hide her true agenda from Manatsu at the same time. It was done in the heat of the moment.

Hope it provides better context.

Just to clarify the details we have so far, the dates make it clear the flashback with the tutor was February her last year of middle school, while the main story is October of her second year of high school. That means it was 20 months prior, when Nagi was 15 instead of 16 (the main story is a month before her 17th birthday, per the dates in September/October and the bio in the volume 1 extras stating her birthday is November and age 16).

We don’t know much about the tutor, but most likely she would have been a high school student, but more than a year older given Nagi’s comment about “I wonder if this is what sensei would have looked like at my age”.

Since the tutor flashbacks entirely concern entrance exams, it was likely a pretty brief period between Nagi admitting her crush, getting kissed, and getting ghosted. A previous flashback (“that reminds me you really are just a middle schooler” in chapter 4) suggests there was some continued interaction after their relationship became more than just student and tutor, and before the tutor ghosted her. But (given what we know now) it’s also possible we saw the full extent of their relationship, and the tutor ghosted her immediately after kissing her, realizing how inappropriate it was. In which case the flashback in chapter 4 was a comment about her being precocious more generally and not after Nagi admitted her crush.

Either way I have full faith in Manatsu being a good partner to help Nagi work through problematic things she went through the year before!

While technically true, individual prefectures had raised their ages of consent already, and there were laws in place for prohibiting indecent sex acts between over adults and minors (under 18). It is true the Penal Code was only amended recently, but it didn't actually have much effect given the existing laws

Hope it provides better context for why she felt awful.

Thank you for the feedback! I believe the original line もらしく自分を正当化する is “plausibly justify myself [to Manatsu]” (hence “make an excuse”) whereas “justify [my actions] to myself” would be 自分に正当化する unless I’m misunderstanding the issue you’re pointing out.

“take advantage of the situation” does sound more idiomatic to me than “take advantage of her situation” now that you mention it, but I’m not sure materially changes the story.

I'm definitely open to corrections but I think this a difference of interpretation and a pretty minor change?

For p20 I read it as her questioning why she's talking about chonkers and opening up, not connected to the following sentence. The identical hairstyle but different scenes makes it hard to tell.

For p21 to me 2nd panel (もっともらしく自分を正当化して, "justify myself in a reasonable way") is her saying that she came up with a flimsy excuse to manatsu in the moment as to why Nagi would even want to do the fake dating thing. The 自分 isn't being modified by the following clause and 正当化する doesn't mean specifically justify to oneself, but like defend an idea generally?

The rest is the same, she hid her true intentions and tried to take advantage.

Would love to hear thoughts.

That might be right, but that is a more practical discussion. This is about fictional stories and a different culture to look at it in real life and in fiction, as well as a different law system and a different (sadly) culture on sexualizing women and minors.

So, don't mix this up. We point out the overall law situation because of this. There are also manga, where different prefecture laws are pointed out, but till now, this is not the case here.

We also do not need to discuss, that from our point of view this is an absolute awful thing. But what you should consider the different viewpoints because of culture. Or better: our lack of understanding it all.
