This is such a strange series. In a good way. The characters are flawed and self-destructive, but they are still understandable, even if not acceptable objectively.

Yea, she did call her that. Either that means he had another relationship between the death and now or the mother didn't want to acknowledge the marriage. Considering how controlling she seems to be, I'd guess the later.
