Something like Vision of Escaflowne, but with less romance and more medieval stuff ?
Something like literally every isekai title made after Sword Art Online, except there is no status screen, no arbitrary numbers and no character, not even the main, can tell their level, job or special skills at all. The latter I guess are learnt through training but you know what I mean, I think.

  • Drifters
  • Yakuza Reincarnation
  • Isekai Samurai
  • Red Ranger Isekai
Thanks.

I suppose I'll write down a real pipe dream.
An isekai without videogame elements.

That's all. It can be a body transfer, a reincarnation or what have you; I'm ok with blatant wish fullfillment beyond common sense; I'm partial towards harems but whatever, let them have it; I don't care if the power ups are through effort or just because the right items were picked up at the right time.
Get rid of status screens, numbers and skill points, the end.

I'd love some sports manga where the characters just enjoy the sport without making it all about competitions. A slice of life with sports theme.

I don't read Iris Zero, but I can relate. I would love for Golondrina to leave the hiatus it's in since 2011 😢 At this point I'd take even just the complete translation of what has already been published.

The video game element is literally my main problem with isekai lol… they r executed so poorly. the only manga with video game element that was executed right was the new gate lol.

Some recs for that crave:
Those who hunt elves: Less serious suggestion
Hero Union BBS: No video game elements apart from one chapter, but it's a non-earth inhabitant who was summoned into an old JRPG and it's mostly his retelling of how much of a terrible experience that was.

I read a bit of that one a long time ago. I was actually trying to remember its name while I wrote my comment. Thanks!

I don't remember it well, but I think yes and no. It is a slice of life with sport theme and a step in the direction I want, but it's too focused on a "girl in the baseball team" thing. I'd prefer the focus to be on practicing the sports just like a regular sports manga, but without all the obsession with taking part in competitions and winning. Maybe what Moon Land could have been if they hadn't convinced MC to join competitions and be very serious about them or the manhwa Spirit Fingers if it were about sports (though this one isn't a slice of life but a romcom).

Not exactly what you wrote, but this one here: https://mangadex.org/title/4c65494c-1bd9-4bca-89fc-e9a8d13ded7e/my-isekai-essay-by-bucket is an isekai oneshot that is just an ordinary life. Even more ordinary than what you wrote

A proper Mortal Kombat one.

Specifically around the infamous Deadly Alliance e.g. Quan Chi and Shang Tsung.

yeah, that'd be pretty difficult.
Because school sports clubs in Japan are pretty hardcore. They have competitions for everything.
And I mean everything.

I guess the closest no-competition sport that is not like "romance/ero manga with sports McGuffin"
are the likes of yuru camp, or that aerobic/diet exercise (I mean, it's kinda sports adjacent)
There's also that new manga about trekking/outdoor running, I forgot what it was.

Add that to the fact that competitions makes for easy excitement, it's much easier for the authors to get some success with the competition route.
I don't even mind that they include competitions. It is a big part of sports after all. I just wish we had some manga where the characters are a bit more laid back about that part.

Thanks for the recommendation! Ecchi isn't really my thing, but the first volume was fun and kinda close to I wanted so I'm adding it to my list.

A rom-com manga (not much com but just at the light hearted moments) with an MC (high school still) training to become a professional MMA fighter. Lots of heavy focus on the MMA side. Like legitimately showcasing actual MMA "moves".
As being someone who is often bruised up he is avoided at school etc loner type etc bla bla
FMC being a girl in his class (preferably a gyaru-ish as I have a bias for gyarus but you could also have the extreme "innocent" type to further insinuate the gap between a rough looking MC and opposite FMC). He doesn't really know who she is as he doesnt pay attention in school at all.
He saves FMC while she was getting harassed by multiple dudes somewhere outside while she was out in the city. Maybe night convenience store visit. As the avg person barely knows how to fight he wrecks em but one of had a knife which kind of cut him a bit on his arm or hand. Which she saw. Let's say he was also wearing a hoodie so she didn't know who was saving her exactly.
Obviously scared by what happened to her but also impressed by the dude's fighting ability she decides to join a self defense class at a gym. Taught by... guess who?..... MCs childhood friend. While I hate a "losing heroine" and prefer 1:1 romance stories. I guess having one in a story does get people interested.
So she actually started to kinda figure out who saved her by connecting the dots due to bits and pieces from conversation in her self defense class and as she overheard MCs coach scolding MC for getting himself hurt and them having to postpone his fight due to that.
MC is shy af. But not in the simpy cucky sense that is normal in manga. Just shy with girls mostly specially if there's romance involved. Yada yada stuff happens. They get closer together. Very close. FMC wanted to be a doctor in the future (insert some reason due to some sad thing in the past). So somehow she's good with stitches for now lets say.. She patches up his cuts for him after some of his "non mma fight" fights. She is sad af seeing him so hurt yada yada.. Shit happens. She basically becomes his "cutman". Just good cute romance. Lots of hugs and some kisses as well. And good technical fight scenes.
You know how some manga have Muhammad Ali or Tyson called out to showcase tough boxers... Maybe you can call out Mcgreger here for a funny moment which could make the manga get some attention lol. Mcgregor aint really the best influence though lol.
You could say end of manga could be when MC reaches the "UFC".
