In any case, it's a bit more refreshing than the usual easy-to-hate selfish reincarnator, I want to see how she feels about the "story" and "characters" not behaving the way she expected.

I don't think she was apologizing for that, more like, she's apologizing for the absolute crazy stuff she's going to do to get her happy ending, and is telling it to the 'villainess' in advance to ease the guilt she shouldn't have for these 'characters'.

I gotta say it seems like it would almost be harder to separate yourself from the world you're living in even if it is based on a romance game or novel you once played. Surely you'd get attached to all the characters and people as you interacted with them? And if you don't view anyone as a living sentient being why would you bother to try and "catch" any of the characters in the first place unless it's just sheer psychopathy and narcissism?

Interesting.
I always thought there weren't enough variety in heroines in "villainess" stories. Feels like the majority of the time they are just role swapped with the villainess and take their place as the antagonist. Sometimes to varying degrees and not always malicious, but still against the FMC.
Other times they continue being the heroine like always, reincarnated or not, and have no particular influence in the story at all, or come to an understanding with the "villainess" and become friends to be protagonists together.

This adds some different dynamics to a heroine who was reincarnated and doesn't realize they aren't the main character, but wants to be, and may or may not fully accept the unexpected changes she can't control.

This really is an interesting take on the trope. I don't think I've ever seen a reincarnator who wants to keep the story the same but doesn't want to screw the original villainess over. She's not as awful as the more common reincarnator antagonists.
But, of course, this still comes with the caveat of viewing people as characters despite the changes. For the first time, the manga's really shown the desperation reincarnated Anna's feeling that spoilers have alluded to. Apologizing to a character, the villainess even, while using out-of-universe terms is very much a desperation move, a sign of her getting close to giving up.

She seems to be fine with the villainess getting a happy ending though.
But yeah in this world everything revolves around Rachel, but Carol has no friends at all.

She probably misses her relationships and at least tried to talk to them.
From her perspective, all her friends and her husband are shunning her for no reason.

Didn't occur to me until now how much "being isekai'd" looks like schizophrenia from an outside perspective. Delusions of grandeur, solipsism, sensory hallucinations(status screens, etc), faulty/irrational decision making. Now I kind of feel bad for the "saint".
