My guess is he was indeed the ace of the team, they became too dependent, the pressure made it drudgery, and he probably missed an important shot (hinted at here) so he quit. That would be the normal trope.

This couldn't have been during HS because then other people would have known he played (they didn't). It's possible that he does still help her practice and never told her he quit being a club member. Since she's a 1st year and the others are 2nd years then she wouldn't have seen that he didn't play when he was a 1st year. The mood went sour because Ryouko and Tomomi knew he wanted to keep it secret and Mizuho spilled the beans. (You would think though that there would be some exposure between the boys and girls basketball clubs.)

Yeah the villainess stuff is basically fake feels like a title grab to get fans who enjoy villainess stuff, stick around when it's not that. Yeah it's clear childhood friends like him but they have 0 chance so why bother
