it was always intended to be a short story

feels like this'll be perfect being adapted to a short anime or live-action.
Maybe something like an episode in Oats Studios series or Love, Death, Robot series.

Indeed it does. Amazon Japan is probably the easiest, but there are other options too like BOOK☆WALKER. Digital version is 2 volumes to the print's 1.
