I don't really know history but I've seen a common trope in isekai cooking that potatoes are a common and 'unpalatable' ingredient? Is that really a thing back then?

Potato may be a simple and easy to grow in huge number crop, but without any seasoning, it taste like bland.

It is really a thing back then, salt, sugar and pepper are the rare stuffs that can be considered worth of golds back then.

No one would think about seasoning it while boiling the potatoes, or even considering making mashed potatoes.

It is really that bad.

Most humans like variety. Very few people enjoy eating the same ingredient prepared in the same way, day after day.

When potatoes were a new ingredient in human consumption, they were generally just boiled. Boiling generally makes everything safe. Now imagine eating nothing but boiled potatoes almost everyday. Just boiled potatoes for dinner. Sometimes salt if you live near a natural source of salt, sometimes butter, usually herbs but mainly just potato.

Just potato day in day out.

Potato.

can't go wrong with soup/stew but surprised he didn't reinvent fries or potato wedges XD

Some potatoes really taste like dirt, so it could be that those are the only type available there.

Given that spices still exist and he was able to make ponzu and tofu it shouldn't be that hard to (relatively) upscale a potato
if at least not fry it in animal fat XD

That really depends on how much good quality oil is available. You can't exactly shallow fry fries or wedges, and honestly, having made them from scratch, they're a pain to make because you have to cut them to shape, blanche them, shock them, and then double fry them to make really, really good ones. And potato wedges are even more annoying because you have to season them before you fry them, which means the seasoning will fall off and contaminate the oil, and having to cook a volume necessary to feed an army would mean the oil would get hammered very quickly and would need almost constant replacement.

Potatoes may have been the star of the dish, but it's the onions that are really getting to me :cry:

i mean magic literally exists in this world along with Lil's inventions so it wouldn't be that hard compared to that supernova fireball that one romantic partner did for the future king XD;

But i mean even classic baked/hardboiled potatoes would be fine if you had some spices/just add meat to it or so versus them just eating barely cooked potatoes by itself/however they had it before mc joined

...this sets me Irish blood aboiling (and with which I shall cook a potato)

I do gotta wonder, is Japanese discourse on flavor always so florid, or this it just a manga trope? I tried making comments like that to a chef once and he just shook his head (kindly)
