There's no real reason for Al to need help preventing people from finding out his identity because there's nothing to tie him to that identity as far as we have been shown. He looks different, talks different, acts different, and based on his age his voice is probably different too. Some one says "hey you're alba" he can just say "yeah a lot of people have been saying we look similar but i'm not him." There are probably people in his class that look similar he could point out that there's lot of similar looking people. Al doesn't have any of Alba's memories so people can't gotcha him on stuff cause he doesn't know anything. As long as Al insists he is not Alba and never ever mentions he is Alba in a public place there's nothing they can do.

It would actually be better for him to respond with annoyance about being mistaken for a dead guy than to act like a cowardly lion every time.

This, somewhat. However, considering he got recognized by his brother by voice alone, and Elena recognized him despite the hair color change. It leads me to believe he’s not that physically different.

With this Elena could likely serve as an alibi or at least as a second person to help gaslight someone else that he’s not Alba under the premise that “how would Elena not recognize her own ex-Fiancé”
