She's just been left alone for a moment, and "bit late" could mean like 15-30 mins, although tbh it's kinda unlikely. Yep. It's usually safe enough for children (within limits) and teens to walk/cycle/commute alone to school in Japan.
Not everywhere in the world is in a shitty third-world or USA neighborhood or city. 😅
