I mean, it's chapter 5. Gotta give it some time.
in their defense, five chapters does seem like enough time to establish some sort of relatable-ness for two characters in a romcom title. It's not like this is an in-depth historical epic or mystery genre series; many other titles have managed it with less seemingly-charismatic characters than Machino (I'm not touching Nitanda, he's an Introvert Male Protagonist and I bet any personality he would have is going to be squashed/overwritten by the pushy extrovert FL).

But this title is already breaking a few conventions, which is also part of the problem of "something missing", I think. It being only 5 chapters with an as-yet unclear identity could just mean we need time to ramp up; but at the same time, if it takes too much longer, people will lose interest, which reduces readers and thus threatens the longevity of the series for the author.

Why is setting up dominoes like that in a dominoes club? Like, dominoes is a game. It'd be like stacking chess pieces and calling it a chess club...

This is also true. However, there are no rules saying you can only use chess pieces to play chess, or domino pieces to play dominoes.
Sure, and you could just play dodgeball in the volleyball club. But most schools would want the club to do what it's actually labeled as.

They could and have played dodgeball in the volleyball club. Because it's fun.

Not every club meeting has to strictly do exactly one thing and one thing only the entire meeting, every meeting. Clubs are as much about socializing as it is about the main activity. When socializing (and time allowing), we can prioritize relationship building over skill building. Sometimes that's a little different from the advertisement. It's OK.

Considering our ML's just by his lonesome, there's really no impact whether he plays a proper game or not. He could quickly reset everything to play a proper game of domino if someone else showed up.

Also, bear in mind, this is just a 5 minute slice-of-life. We're not being shown that this is the only thing he did the entire time in that room.

I feel like you're just trying to keep from saying "stop doing things differently than how I want them to be done"

Nitanda is absolutely using domino pieces in a way that's perfectly accepted.

I just went to Youtube, typed "dominoes" and, of the first 10 results that weren't pizza, only 1 of them referred to "the game" (and it was a "how to play").
The other nine videos were all the way that Nitanda is doing it in his clubroom.

You're totally allowed and free to feel like he's "wrong", but please don't go acting like you're the arbiter for determining how everyone else should be enjoying things.

I'm just saying that it's weird to setup and knock down dominoes as a school sanctioned club.

I came here to post about that. Why do so many manga characters have rolled up sleeves like that? As in, they roll up the sleeves of shirts with already short sleeves? Is it some sort of trope?

This might be the first time I read a school days/SoL manga that actually feels like an older person fondly looking back on their youth, instead of reading like it was written by a teenager trying to take an adult perspective. It’s also nice that a lot of the insane tropes and extreme drama you’d expect from the genre seem to be missing.

I would imagine that most people don’t have the patience for it (I sure wouldn’t have back in my 20s), but I’m happy to see where it goes.
