People often forget that poodles weren't originally bred as fancy rich people living topiaries lol. Their original job was waterfowl hunting, same as the Retrievers! While Labs and Goldens were bred for coats that repelled water to be faster, Poodles were bred for coats that naturally kept them warm in cold water so they could still be used during the chilly fall migratory season.

Very informative, thank you for the information. But wasn't waterfowl hunting a rich people hobby back then in most cases and when that died out, these dogs lost their original purpose?

Waterfowl hunting was how a lot of people put food on the table, it didn't become a hobby for rich gits until later.

On the borzoi bit, dogs with very low body fat would also tend to get colder quicker in water, same as humans. A buddy of mine who got into bodybuilding went from being able to swim in the lake for hours with the rest of us to nearly getting hypothermia in half an hour at his leanest.
