Yknow I've never really understood the academic purpose of a 'sports day' in Japanaese media. I definitly wouldn't have enjoyed it myself as a kid.

This was a nice chapter though, so maybe the purpose of sports day is to give us interesting momments in manga.

The sports day equivalents some of my schools had were always a great time. Basically get a day off to just be out in the sun doing things or watching the other kids doing things.

My middle school had a similar thing, and it was always really fun. Of course, ours also had water balloon fights, so that makes most things better.

The interesting thing about the way this chapter is written is that it kinda hints towards what happened to Mizuno in his past Sports day that caused his practically trauma response to it.

Like the dialogues and facial expressions are excellent per usual, but with the framing and structure of this chapter, you can almost tell that the events here are closely mirrored to the past.


Now I cannot wait to see what’s going to happen next chapter. For one, the person succeeding is Wakao instead so you cant exactly play the ol’ “overcoming trauma” for the next chapter. But the unusualness will definitely make it interesting.

As someone who taught as an ALT there, as far as I saw it the Sports Day is a good opportunity for parents to go and see their kids participate. Although if I'm being honest, even after years of teaching at Japanese schools I still don't completely understand the way the schools are set up. They feel like a weird mix of what grade school in the UK must have been like in the 50's, and a training program meant to produce office workers. The one thing I do like is the "sky room", it's a voluntary decompression class with privacy windows that students can go to when they're feeling overwhelmed.
