Who are they hoping to marry into the imperial family? It seems too weird they would hope that their princess Fara first gets engaged to a marquis's son, but then that engagement would be "upgraded" to an imperial prince. That doesn't make a whole lot of sense. In the first place, the imperial family would be the one deciding if it's okay or not, so Renarute could maybe offer such a union, but they would still be in a weaker position. The Magnolia imperial family will marry their princes and princesses for maximum profit, obviously. Why would they snatch a fiancée from one of their own nobles? That seems pretty strange, even if they could do it. If they wanted that particular girl, they could have already done it, before the marquis family entered the picture at all.

Yeah i don't get how the "we want a royal candidate" works when you sit down for other lower status engagements already? What is the aim? Show off the princess in these gatherings and shoot for a "notice me senpai" for the royal family? What if the marquis family accepts the engagement? You gonna reject them till an offer from royal family appears?
Perhaps, the dark elf country plans to ambush and kill the princess and blame it all on the Magnolia empire, and demand a concession in the form of a marriage into the royal family. After all, we already got to know that her mother is a concubine and how she was treated, she's 'expendable', no way they mean for her to be the royal marriage candidate.
..But if it happens, I expect mc to throw a bucketful of wrenches into their plans.

Aye. Would there even be anyone present from the Magnolia imperial family? I doubt they are so free they would send one of their own members to oversee a marriage meeting between their marquis family and someone else. I don't remember if it was mentioned, but I reckon in a situation like this, the imperial family would have actually given a permission (or denied) such a marriage before anything could be talked about. That is, the Bardia family would need to consult the emperor to ask if the marriage is acceptable. After all, the relationship between the countries is complicated and thus the imperial family would pay attention to it. Maybe such a thing even was mentioned and I have forgotten. It was at that point the imperial family would have said they intend to first study if their prince marrying princess Fara is beneficial, so the marquis will need to wait. The imperial family wouldn't say "sure, go ahead", only to later appear and snatch the bride away.
So strange indeed. Who knows what the Renarute royals are hoping for.

i Think the plan is somehow for the marquis family to walk away saying, the princess is much too fancy and refined for one as lowly as us so we believe only a member of the royal family would be worthy of one like her.
thats kinda crazy but the royal family may want to have a connection to this country so if it doesn’t work out with a marquis, they may have To pick out someone more important, perhaps even one of their own. However mc is op and brilliant so he’s gonna give them nothing to complain about and the girl will accept the engagement in defiance of her mother/teacher for the sake of her own happiness and because she falls so madly in love with him…probably

That's exactly why Norris's plan is so stupid and simply won't work. But Norris isn't smart and is blinded by his ultranationalism. More will be revealed in later chapters.
Remember that part of the terms of the alliance between Magnolia and Renalute is a marriage to a royal or equivalent noble. The plan here is basically to bully the utter hell out of whatever noble child they send until Magnolia has no choice but to marry a prince off. It's not so much showing off the princess as it is forcing whoever came from Magnolia into voluntarily withdrawing.

Concubines have a different standing in Renalute. Polygamy isn't just accepted in Renalute's royal family, it is actually expected. Dark elves have low fertility so the Queen is merely whoever managed to give birth first otherwise the power struggles would never end. Every other wife becomes a concubine even if the order of marriage was different. So there isn't much of a difference between a "Queen" and a "concubine". For dark elves, having a child at all is a real struggle so the King needs to have many wives. And in the case of Eltia (Farah's mother) she married the King first because they are each other's first loves.

A son of a Marquis is already the limits what the imperial family is willing to do. They will not be changing their mind on this. Renarute itself does not provide that much benefit to Magnolia from what has been revealed, but Renarute benefits massively from being connected to Magnolia. This means that Magnolia can and will abandon them if they demand too much. Well, at best that's the case. Worst case, Magnolia will prune the dissidents from Renarute to make them more subservient. I really don't see any basis for them to believe Magnolia even values Renarute enough to consider an Imperial marriage.
Furthermore, Ranier is known as the nation's sword and should be known as a close aide of the Emperor. This means he will be afforded much more leniency than other nobility. If Renarute harms Ridd and Ranier in his rage starts to kill officials from Renarute, then it's very likely that not only will Magnolia back Ranier with little to no punishment but also apply heavy sanctions on Renarute for harming one of their nobility.
Frankly speaking, the Dark Elves should be a long lived species which would be reflected in their planning. Norris's whole plan revolves around very quickly outwitting Magnolia's nobility and taking over the Empire in short order. This reflects the planning of someone with not a lot of life left to live. Then again Norris is an idiot. A smart elf would plan a long term strategy of slowly integrating and consuming them from the inside to build support before going for the Imperial Princess position.
