Speed comes from strength. The stronger you are, the lighter the sword feels, and the faster you can redirect and swing it. That's where the main advantage of being stronger in a swordfight comes into play. Generally speaking, there is no "strength vs speed" trade-off.
But it only goes so far. As I said before, swords aren't particularly strength-dependent. They're agile, finesse weapons, and anyone who relies only on strength will be a poor fencer.
All in all, swords are great weapons for people who're not that strong. Especially long swords, since they're two-handed but not as massive as great swords. But the stereotypical finesse sword, the rapier, requires some of the highest strengths among swords, since they're actually pretty large, both long and in the upper weight class for swords.
