A backstory is only "tragic" if you can contrast yourself against it and invoke sympathy for your plight by working to rise beyond it. Whether you succeed or fail, that effort must be made.

If you simply use it as an excuse to act the vile bully, a fool blinded by envy and pettiness, then you're not a victim of your surroundings and history.

You cannot control your circumstances, but you can control your conduct.
