Thankfully my favorites are in the clear for one more round. Well I'll be sad if Hibana gets dropped but I don't think it'll be her.

It'll be like New Game!. Gay moments sprinkled here and there just to have every contestant end up married to another contestant off-screen at the end of the manga.

After the interim examination, I wondered what team Suzu's storyline was going to be here. Obviously it was going to be about dealing with something unexpected in their performance, but just messing up their dancing again would be lame. This was a nice way for the author to show their improvement without re-treading the same story. Also just have to say that those panels of them dancing with the stars in the background look absolutely beautiful.

I thought, that power outage is a great chance for ballad/acapella, while the other member were giving beats and everything. But I remember that Shuri's expertise is dancing.

holy shit, caught up to raws and at possibly the peak of this arc

I was kind of expecting this honestly, considering what we've seen leading up to this chapter; Team Mimi were helping Anon with her issues by compromising, Team Ibuki lost a bunch of time going on tour, Team Karin stumbled on stage and Team Urara couldn't decide on a direction until they threw away her phone

meanwhile we have only ever seen Team Suzu being determined, working hard on an idea until it's as polished as they can make it, then working even harder, like they even had Shuri bend her knees to be at eye level with Suzu at the end even though she's taller, and now we see they even prepped for any emergencies, very deserved win

also I can't be the first to point out that the room the power cut out in was the room Tsubasa went to see that text?

EDIT: went back and looked over the judges scores, kinda interesting to compare, like Nyaako didn't score anyone lower than 85, while Ebichiri didn't score anyone higher than 87; the lowest score was the 72 that Tsubasa gave Team Karin, while the highest was the 95 Aria gave to Team Suzu.

I'd have to like, make a chart or something to figure out who is the harshest judge.

also, Team Mimi collected three scores in the 90's, while Team Suzu only had one score over 90; meanwhile Team Urara collected four scores in the 70's and two 80's, while Team Karin had three 70's and three in the 80's, so despite being only one point apart, even at a glance you can tell who was scoring higher

yea Aria, a really powerful bond they have there
almost like a romantic pair would have smh my head

my guess is Urara leaving solely based on story progression. we were just given the start of Hibana's character arc, but with the new haircut, Urara's has been cleanly completed. meanwhile Michiru still has unfinished flirting to be done with Karin

as a member of the "remove the tag" division, my argument is that there's so little focus on romance since the competition started, that it doesn't really play a part anymore
not only has our main couple not been able to properly interact since boarding the ship, but even the romantic rival teasing only seemed to last one round

it's one of those things where I would say GL elements are present, but they arent prevalent enough to being this piece into the genre of it, and mangadex's GL tag serves as a genre tag
as such having the tag around is just going to bring in people who are gonna feel like they were baited (see also, Flame's joke on the credits page)
The tag will come back when Mimi and Ibuki finally get together at the end of the competition in a short uh, checks notes, 250 chapters or so. (But yeah figure it'll come back eventually when more romantic stuff happens, and given how they've been so far it definitely feels like it will have that, just won't be for a long while)

Absolutely goated chapter and to think that’s WITHOUT a song playing for us, only the lyrics. Just imagining it getting a good anime adaptation sheds tears in my eyes much like this chapter did 😭

Hopefully it's Urara, I didn't find any reason of both Michiru & Hibana :thonk:
I think it's pretty up in the air, honestly; you could make any argument for any of the group to get the boot

Urara Red Flags: directionless team leader, unable to really take criticism well; choose not to include a dance in a competition involving dancing; they probably have hours of footage of her scrolling on her phone; she literally thought to herself that she realized she really just wanted to apologize to her friend over winning

Urara Green Flags: once they picked a direction she threw her full ass into it, you can really feel through the lyrics that the song is one she helped write, and felt so strongly about that she choose not to include choreography for it; cut her bangs so she can see clearly now, huge glow up both for her design and her character arc

Michiru Red Flags: caught colluding; threw Urara's phone and song away only three days from the deadline; collapsed onstage which was already a thing Aria warned would get somebody kicked if they didn't take care of themselves, ruining the mood and making it harder for the next group

Michiru Green Flags: refused to participate with the collusion, so her hands are clean; throwing away the previous song gave the team the direction they needed to work together; got to show off her guitar skills and songwriting chops

Hibana Red Flags: her contribution to the lyrics and the song itself are pretty minimal, just one rap line; her skills are noted as being "generally pretty good but often not the best" so she's being eyed for getting cut unless she manages to stand out; she's not a popular actress or youtuber, so she's not likely to get that immunity card from the popularity poll; her backstory is pretty much nonexsitant, no drama, no inner demons, she's a good girl who wants to do better, which is pretty boring unless the author comes up with something new later, which after 70+ chapters feels like they should've by now

Hibana Green Flags: she did rap, so she did put her voice into the song; she did stop Urara from diving in to get her phone, commiting the team to the new direction; both Urara and Michiru fucked up harder than she did so she could dodge the bullet by not being the target
