There has been some hints about this:

• During the drinking chapter that started Taomugu, Miki is already saying that Tao is hers.
• Post drinking locker room scene miki was not happy seeing tao with Tsumugu
• Miki sees as Tao as "her toy"
• Tao wants to reveal her secret to Tsumugu but Miki doesnt let her
• Mikis worry when she finds out how Tao thinks of Tsumugu
• Theory: we have not seen miki date another person since opening the store opened. Tao thinks she is making miki a better person.

Author is definitely going as fast as possible by making every character act rashly.

nah I remember from the start Miki was very much into Tao, I can't pinpoint the moment cause it has been some time but it has always been wierd between both.

It really took the wind out my sails. I seriously, genuinely loved this series so much so it's super sad

Looks like it's solidly back to Miki/Tao. It's not the worst thing in the world but really feels like it kneecaps all the Tao teasing in the series prior to the acceleration to the end.

It's been obvious that Miki was obsessed with Tao from the beginning. For those who don't remember you might wanna reread the earlier chapters.

The only way to solve this mess is a linear polycule.

Miki <-> Tao <-> Tsugumu <-> Saku

Only in this order can the balance be maintained

Tao is trans. Where can a trans person like her work so they get to wear the clothes that match their gender identity? In Tao's case, a fashion themed maid cafe works perfectly. It fits her interest in making and wearing high fashion and getting to be herself, a woman. As in all of her main things in life. Validation for who she is inside is something that Miki, who loves her, would want to provide for Tao.

It's almost like the cafe was made with Tao's SPECIFIC circumstances in mind. Down to the letter.

Miki designed the cafe to be the perfect happy place for Tao. The subtext of Miki's love has always been there. She relays on numerous occasions, in her feelings, Tao is hers. This is not a random pull.

It's possible the author would have taken it more slowly and gone deeper into the lore of how Miki got here but ran out of time (axe?).
