Can someone remind me why an earth video game is a better flight simulator than anything the sci-fi military has access to? Or is it just his ship being OP

His ship is OP, and he's practiced things that normal people wouldn't, like charging headfirst into a swarm of crystalline life forms that can destroy your ship with a single touch.

The advantage isn't that an Earth video game is a better simulator, it is that he honed his skills in a game with minimal penalty for death and no expectation anyone will be doing this IRL. And now his pro gamer instincts deny conventional tactics because he has a LOT of practice doing things the crazy way.

Also his reaction speed improved since it was a game because he can slow down time.
Military have their own torpedo boats but no pilot could match him. Maybe except machine intelligence or some nobles, but former won't do it because it's suicide and the latter are in charge of cruisers, battleships - flagships generally - and are the fleet officers. Since their mods are expensive and skills useful, they'd rather be kept alive than sacrificed.

There's no explanation that sounds reasonable is the problem. He's too good to be suicidally reckless, but no one who isn't suicidally reckless would do that, and they wouldn't be around long enought to get good at it.
I think that just declaring to be a better merc and having the skills and a good ship would be enough.
It was dumb for someone in the field and that just watched the field replay to say that MC have a trick, but to flame the dumb merc up is dumber, MC doesn't have a trick to hide, his experience in the game is unique yes, but it only made him more skilled and able to use some battle plans no one ever dared to, his unique ship is a core part of the tactic so saying is thanks to skill and gear is the honest and straight answer.

Imagine picking a fight when someone lifts you up in the air in one hand. You are not gutsy, you are a plain fool. 😬 😬

it's annoying how he thinks his game play skills are unique to this dimension. they have games too, far more advanced games, and they have extremely high-tech simulators. MC did not face any real life or death situations in the game and neither do they need to face those in a far superior simulator.
Most games balance realism with entertainment(non-realism to make it more enjoyable) for a reason, so his game play hours (experience), other than the lore turning into a goldmine of info, should be far inferior to simulator hours.
