probably one of the reasons Lunaria was his fiancee, they needed someone competent with the hope he would just defer to her and basically let her rule like the King seems to be doing hereTradition plays a part of it, certainly, but it could easily be a codified precedent, rather than one that's merely "the way we did it for as long as we have". Whether it's Loran or Dale or some hypothetical third child candidate, the issue of bloodlines dictating who sits on the throne remains, if they are the only "rightful" candidates by virtue of the existing system they've implemented, regardless of their actual capacity to do so.
