IIRC, at early chapters, it was hinted that Arc were actually strong enough to be a royal knight. But instead he choose to stay as garrison knight and guarding the gate.

Regarding the translation, I've been reading fan translations a long time so using English or Japanese honorifics is basically interchangeable. Do whatever feels better for you, the translators.

I personally prefer the Japanese honorifics. Depending on which one is used it changes the context of the relationships between people that doesn't really translate to English.

There's also a very weird sense of... inappropriate formality, is the best way I can describe it, in certain instances when you try to translate honorifics.

Like, "-san" is the single most common honorific in the Japanese language and basically everyone uses it, even elementary school children. So it's perfectly normal to see a 7-year old address a school friend as, for example, "Momo-san" or "Yuu-san".

But "-san" is almost always translated as "Mr./Ms./Mrs." in English, leading that same scenario to just feel weird, because now you have a 7-year old addressing their peers as "Ms. Momo" or "Mr. Yuu".

I think there are many ways to handle honorifics, with pros and cons to each... but changing how a translation uses honorifics in chapter 85 of a monthly series is not a really good idea.

As for the chapter, I think it would have been more impactful if we had some kind of foreshadowing about Ark's internal struggles or whatever. Without that, it feels more like a way to pad out the chapter and leave Usato's fight to the next one. (Or did Ark have such character development and I just forgot?)
