still needs actual structured instruction and an atmosphere that fosters it where the child feels safe enough to be willing to put in the effort.

And it sounds like Emma's not really gotten that, given it really is just her and Charlotte halfway around the world from her only other family.

There's already Akihito. She trusts him as much as she would trust any family member. I reckon he's a big brother-father hybrid in Emma's eyes. He should only talk to her in Japanese. That's how little kids learn naturally, anyway. He should just make it such talk that it teaches her the language. At this point, she would most certainly be willing to put in the effort if it's Akihito. Even if he's the Uncle Cool who rarely causes her any grief.

I agree that he should definitely talk to her in Japanese if he's aware of it being an issue, but it's also...not like it's his responsibility to oversee her education/immersion into Japan. And realistically, it also would happen over a longer period of time than we've been shown has passed in-story, in any case.

It also takes more than one person, and constant immersion. But, maybe that will be come a plot point going forward between him and Charlotte and Emma; I'm sure the manga could shoehorn in her furthered acclimation - though the ML has a lot on his plate as-is "getting his own oxygen mask on", as it were, so I don't know if I would expect it to happen immediately, or (again, realistically) quickly.
