The usual logic I've seen is the molecular structure of the crystal being the "circuit" that the mana utilizes to channel and exist within the crystal at all.
Crushing would destroy that structure, rendering it useless.

But that's just a worldbuilding thing and could easily be mutable/altered/ignored as required by the setting and/or plot, I think.
