Well, admittedly the source is quite biased (being the headmaster her (him?) self there), but it was mentioned that the tale of the both of them was passed down via oral tradition amongst the elves.

Good question. So another elf who knows more of the future or can the headmaster change her appearance. But why would her father have the guardians dragons kill elria. Would make more sense for somebody else who is a partner of the other hero. They do not seem to care for lives and therefore have no problems if the dragon girl died.
