It carries the idea of the series better, and them being relatively unimportant in the grand scheme of things makes their struggles more interesting. The world doesn't revolve around Leon and Marie. It probably helps that the author wrote a lot of the world building already instead of doing it on the fly, which seems to be the case for the main series.

This isn't a prequel, it's a spin-off, where did you get the idea it's a prequel from?

I mean I guess it doesn't really say it's the official Prequel anywhere but according to the comment below there is some continuity shenanigans so I myself considered it as a some sort of Prequel.

As far as the Web Novel goes, from what i remember reading notes about it (didn't feel like read the whole story so read only summaries), at the end of the story Leon dies, and so are a few of the other girls.
Marie is the only surviving one, and she ends up wishing that Leon gets a better next life while not remember anything about his current life.
Later it gets revealed that the Leon of Main Story is the same one as the one from the Marie Route except he doesn't have any memories about Marie Route, and only has memories of his life from Japan.
It is also confirmed that the Marie in Main Story is different from Marie in Marie Route, as she is from a parallel world, unlike the Main Story one who is same world as Leon.
So, basically this makes Marie Route as a prequel to the Main Story.

Sad it ended with many things still not shown...
But the LN is 100% worth the read~
I still stand my ground when I say that this version is better than the main story in many ways. Leon isn't a douche and coward who can't make his decision on the girls, retains his status quo as a Mob (the one thing main story has forgotten) and the overall risk they have to take each time they about to do something

This is similar to the "The Vampire Princess of the Lost Country" which is a side story of Overlord, featuring EvilEye. It was also much better than overlord with Ainz actually being competent and using his head instead of relying on his subordinates.

I still feel we got robbed. No Kiss, no proposal and olivias breakdown got completely ignored and skipped. What a waste.

i was contemplating for a while if I should read that spoiler because I was genuinely interested in reading the Novel myself. Thanks for the heads up I guess. Seems like I don't have to bother anymore. A shame really because I enjoyed reading this manga a lot. Marias character is so much more developed and better written than anyone else in this story. The rest of the cast are just regular stereotypes. Only Maria felt human with her negative and positive character traits. Too bad the story goes downhill from now on. Now I understand why the manga ended on this chapter.

the world is implied to reset in main story and the main story it self is the final one. so marie route is one of the reset before main story happened. alternate universe is probably a better way to describe it but I do like the sound prequel because it make as if the reset marie did at the end of marie route did change things (I'm not 100% sure if its ever confirmed if her wish is what change how the events turns out)

but yeah paralel universe did slip my mind when making that comment
