Yeah, my guess is the "Old Era" explorers used "mana" (for lack of a better term, since one isn't given in this manga) internally instead of projecting it externally. It would explain why a 65-year old man can move the way he does even after 30 years of retirement.

So projecting your mana externally would basically be like sapping your own life force to the older generation. Why exhaust yourself for a flashy effect when you could just... be better?

Also, I feel like its pretty implied that the reason gramps' techniques and strategies were lost was because of the rise of skills, or at least that's how I see it.
