thank you for your care in translating this entire arc! i'm normally on yamaoka's side of things, but i think that kaibara raised some pretty normal and vital questions to the shopowner (what do you sell? how do you understand it?), and these intro chapters have given us a good surrounding context of curry's unique standing as a dish in japan! for a series that often delves into the historic or social context of japanese cuisine, it's thoroughly cool & entertaining to see them tackle something as ubiquitious and amorphous as curry, and it's always neat to see the team depicting different cultures/ethnicities with respect for their expertise and knowledge🙌 great work, and thanks for sharing! excited to learn more about curry!🌺🌺

Thank you! I may not be an official translator but I do respect the work a lot, so I'm always mindful to not detract from it if I can.

I want people to enjoy the story the way I enjoyed it (or as close to it as I can reasonably get).

I think, if anything, the manga's dedication to always doing its best in researching and depicting the culinary complexities and depth of other nations respectfully (despite being mostly focused on the more famous and obscure Japanese dishes most of the time) is something that'll always be commendable and worthy of praise, regardless of age and generation.

Maybe it's just me, but I think this particular arc can only be written when the popularity of real Indian curries only started to pick up in the 1980s and early 1990s, and your average Japanese Joe still thought that "real" curries are Japanese curries.

While a quick research does show that there have been native Indian and Nepali chefs who came to Japan during that time to open South Asian-style curry restaurants, I think that there were many more Japanese people (including curry makers) who thought the same way as Tochikawa here, except those like researchers or genuine South Asian cuisine aficionados from Japan.
