There is so much wtf to unpack here. So long ago..does that mean he reverted his age or is he a reincarnation? The adopted boy became functionally immortal so new (to us) recurring nemesis for the series? The fact that he has enslavement over a literal demon.

The boy reanimating the entire village and keeping them on a loop for more than a year should have been an indicator that they were dangerous let alone the issue that everyone in the village became sick and not long after taking him in his daughter became sick as well. The boy was likely always a malevolent being that spread plague even without being aware.

... Was it not obvious to everyone else that the boy was Hazen?
the wizard was hazen, unless i misunderstood it sounds like he had to kill ash.

pretty sure it's already been established that he's reincarnated

In essence, after enduring several days of fasting and progressing in his objectives, Hazen goes to have a drink with Yan and talks about his past, which triggers the flashback and ends in Yan's memories being sealed.

It's obvious where the author was going with this, but the execution is poor and not well though out, which obviously left many readers confused.

This will become a plot device for much later in the story, when Yan and Hazen will be in conflict, only for those memories to be released once Yan prevails or they go their separate ways due to misunderstandings. Wish it had been done better though...

Is Ash Hazen or is Hazen the master? It feels like he is the immortal monster which is why he goes after those but he could also be the master who reincarnates himself to chase after Ash and also gets rid of threats

What's up with the first panel of selling stuff for 600 times the price? Where's that come into play.

hmmm.... seems like Leifa is well-aware of Hazen's backstory. Even though a few chapters back she was concerned about him using Yan as his replacement(which was a subtle indicator that she knew something more about him than was revealed thus far), I didn't expect her to be in this deep. She may even be the only person who knows his secrets. I'm very interested in learning how these two met(via the story ofc, not some comment spoils).

Also, side note here's the point in chapter 1 where he briefly mentions his past to himself. It still doesn't give exact context as to whether he is the boy(Ash) in this chapter or the wizard, though I too think Hazen was the wizard in the story, since it would only make sense in the chapter 1 flashback, that he is the wizard who "lost" to the other mage(presumably Ash), then did the reincarnation/age reversal.

The story establishes that Hazen's previous life was a famous long-lived powerful wizard. The wizard in this chapter is similarly famous, powerful, old enough to have an older teen/adult daughter, and even shares Hazen's face. The boy Ash is shown becoming friends with the wizard's daughter for a short-lived time before she quickly falls terminally ill. Becoming desperate, Ash delved into forbidden arts to save her while the Wizard is preoccupied with his own research into a cure. However, Ash's acts corrupt him into an immortal monster and Ash abandons his humanity, the daughter passes away uncured, and we know the wizard ultimately failed to kill the non-humanoid Ash and died. Page 17 even has him slipping up due to drinking and switch from the third-person Wizard to first-person pronouns.

I think since we're shown Ash transformed into some snake thing, the other wizard character is someone else. Maybe even responsible for the illness, whispered about the immortality cure to Ash, etc.

I was relatively sure the kid was Hazen but now I’m really not sure. The execution of the whole chapter is all over the place, this might be one of the few times I’d go find the light novel to clarify, assuming there is one.

Maybe next chapter helps but I don’t think we’ll get back to this for ages. I also was wondering if it could be in future to some extent but that makes even less sense. Honestly I think all we need to know is that Hazen has ulterior motives to forging a better world, which is fine but then why give us such a truncated but also unclear backstory?
