Why do we like Kusonoki again? Personally, I'm snakeki all the way, but tomboy has some really great chemistry with the lead too.

edit: thought about it a bit more. In my mind, Kusonoki has some debt in the current relationship. This is twice she's completely ghosted our MC for reasons that are frankly bullshit. If you can't fight for what you want, then don't be surprised when you lose it to someone else.
With that logic what's Hebikawa's standing or right to win in this case?
I seriously don't understand why she has supporters beyond the plain fetish for sadistic girls

She's actually making a push to get to know him even after finding out about his glowup. She's being persistent in trying to spend time with him. Key is her pro-activity.

I honestly think she has support because she's a complex character, while the main female lead is a boring disgrace. She has support IN CONTRAST to Kusunoki, who many don't like.

Is Hebikawa pleasant? No, she's a petty and frankly dumb teenager. Like when she naively thinks she's "seducing" him. But she has a lot of things going on, and she has a potential for character growth. She's now being challenged by a world that does not behave like she thought it would.

For the record, I would 100% prefer Otobe. But Hebikawa is STILL better than the main female lead because...

Consider Kusunoki instead. She's a walking set of tropes of the boring, perfect, cute, clumsy, secretly introvert girl. Literally nothing original there.
I could forgive up to this point, but on top of that she's also completely passive, and she's ghosting the MC for honestly dumb reasons. She has ZERO initiative whatsoever. And she's just plain boring. Like, author please give her something. One hobby, I don't know, even something cliche as liking to cook or something. ANYTHING at all instead of this boring emptiness.

Most of us here, we are the audience for this genre and so have read many manga of this type. Kusunoki main faults are that she's truly passive and truly boring... The "perfect wallflower" is not endearing.

For me, Hebikawa is the reason that this isn't Romcom Manga #1985231.

She's the novel element to an otherwise entirely formulaic story--y'know, the "average boy falls for perfect girl who's beautiful, smart, athletic, coincidentally clumsy for plot reasons, secretly has hobbies that boys like". She even has the tomboy best friend who first doesn't like, then falls for, said average boy.
There's a thousand stories just like this, and Kusunoki isn't special in that light.

But Hebikawa comes in as a villain specifically against the concept of Kusunoki, while also being connected to Keisuke via his past.
She's not a romantic rival--even if she seems to be, she's actually a characterization rival of Kusunoki. She might end up falling for Keisuke at some point, but her goal isn't to steal him for her own sake, but to prove that Kusunoki isn't the perfect, proper, pure girl that she shows everyone.
She's just not the type of character you see in these sorts of stories, and even if some readers don't articulate it, that "outlier factor" draws attention to her.

There are multiple reasons why different people do like her--some as a romance interest, some as a villain, some to just be contrarian, and I'm sure others. But her being effectively from outside the trope of the genre is why she gets all that attention.

You don't have to like her. You're not supposed to, at least at first. But I'll say it every chapter if I have to - there's a reason she's popular, and it's surprisingly more nuanced than one might expect.

Hebekawa is literally a cookie cutter villainess trope tf you mean? Lol

And to reiterate - yes, she's trope-y as a villain character. But she also doesn't technically belong in a series like this, going by "the tropes and formulae", and her inclusion itself is the noteworthy factor.

poor Otobe, she was cute there, but has 0 chance, also crazy she didn't notice how the MC has clearly fallen for Kusunoki yet

Fully agree, i feel like her motives (and the paid dating shit, i think people forgot about that) instantly plummet her to the bottom. Kusunoki is plain boring, while Otobe actually knows what she wants and tries to get it without tearing other people down like they’re political rivals

Haah, poor girl. She's clumsy, but she's still trying so hard. I am a bit sad she will have wasted her effort in the end...

it's still wild to me that we've gotten two heroines who've had big falls/impacts, and one had no injury after a high-velocity mouth smashing kiss, and the other hit her face into pavement, but needed a bandage for her checks notes ....knee.
She must be a footballer... Whenever something touches them, they hurt their knee, even if everyone saw that their head was touched. :dogkek:

well she met both Kusunoki (when they were in primary school) and later on Keisuke (her introduction to this story) via football, so...I guess you might be onto something.

That was cute, but also sad cause she got no shot....unless the author pulls a fast one on us readers. Would be kinda funny if she won instead of Kusonoki or Snek
