"I'm the boyfriend of her friend/neighbor. She went to grab something and will be back soon" solves all the issues of him being there and is true. And it still gives them plausible deniability about anyone else living there because they haven't mentioned the actual girlfriend and he's laser-focused on a man being there (And if worse comes to worse they could just lie and say she's a friend who's staying there for work-related reasons if they're worried about the dad reacting to her being gay)

This is so transparent as drama-manufacturing (in a story that's already drama-mining because "she's my (step-)sister and my girlfriend) that it's just dumb and lame.
