Who are these manga with absolutely pathetic main characters supposed to appeal to?
Like, if I wrote a story with a main character who was a 40 year old morbidly obese neckbeard who lives in his parents basement, never had a job, has no friends or life ambitions, and spends his days talking trash to strangers on reddit and watching porn...would that make a compelling manga character? Who would that appeal to?

The fact she was heavily assuming her 'clean and married' neighbor was acting high and mighty against her being a neet slob that drinks mid-day, not only indicates massive projection, but she's fully aware that she's a broken, screwed up human being, yet doesn't fully acknowledge it and tries to make herself better for her own sake, but instead drinks and wallows herself into self-pity.

I'll still follow to see how much further she'll screw herself over as I have low expectations of her getting much better as a character, even the story's summary points it out as much.

Also, anyone who smokes while cooking is a HARD pass for me.

Nah, I think it's more of "gratefulness", she's grateful for him which is why this is appealing, if she wasn't there'd probably be no appeal, she's aware enough to be grateful, many people will live their lives unaware and ungrateful, idiots basically

Fundamentally, all male romantic fantasies involve protecting and providing for a girl.

Traditionally this manifests as a “Damsel in Distress” trope, but what we see here is a more exaggerated form of that where the female lead is just perpetually in distress and needs constant help from the male lead.

For my tastes, this is going too far, but I guess the appeal is that literally anyone can self-insert as the male lead. The kid isn’t particularly smart or rich or physically capable, he’s able to save the damsel basically just by existing.
