Can't really say anything substantive with just the first half like this, especially without the knowledge of what she wrote down on her Tanzaku slip.
Obviously it's gonna be "gloom & doom" after she just up and left Sorata behind, with him being largely absent from the chapter (even when physically present).

We do get another dose of Ayano's personality, and once again his general demeanor and way of speaking make him rather off-putting when compared to the rest of the cast (and now the two side-friends see it to varying degrees). But most of what's currently ongoing hinges on whether Sorata & Miyuki actually attempt a dialogue, and while I expect it to happen in order to not let the narrative just.....stall completely, can't really go into things much more at this time.

Though having said that - I will say that Mary's line about thinking it obvious that Miyuki would go onto college struck me as odd, especially her line about Miyuki being "particular and super curious". Mostly because if I were to classify Miyuki as "super curious", it's mostly out of a sense of being in a place so unlike where she grew up, rather than an innate characteristic of her personality.
That, and it doesn't necessarily seem like something that would translate into "well that means higher education's obviously in your future", but it does call into question whether Miyuki really sees herself as someone who could have aspirations in her life. She has always been good at stuff, but has never been really all that invested in those things--and her inability to really mesh with her peers because of her reserved personality didn't help matters. Sorata came along and started shifting that side of her, and she went so far as to follow him back to Tokyo (whether of her own volition *or for her grandfather), so she's definitely not the same person as before.
The issue from there being that she needs to truly square what she wants, and not sit here basing herself and her future on what those around her expect. Miyuki needs to self-actualize, basically, and not listen to Ayano, or Sorata, or her grandfather, or anyone else.

So I had more to say than I thought I did, I guess.
But, thanks for the TL work.

Also--you initially translated the second speech bubble on pg. 16 as "hmm." instead of "well," - as it's a flashback bit from 20.2.
The "hmm." made more sense as a response from Miyuki to Sorata's line that recalls Ayano's sentiments about Miyuki "limiting herself" just to go to a school that Sorata could manage to attend, but I figured I'd point it out because the change-up sorta calls into question which speech bubble belongs/belonged to which character.

As the great General Iroh once said, "Who are you, and what do you want?" A lot of people around Miyuki assuming what they want from her, rather than her own choices. Going to Tokyo was a start, her own choice, but now what? Is she going to keep being reactive, or proactive? We'll just have to see.

Also side note that Miyuki definitely feels like one of those kids who is smart and does well at most things but once they hit a wall, she gives up, as supported by the flashbacks of her childhood. Sorata as you say changed things, but she's still effected by the consequences of that childhood which is really cool to see I think.

she also since hasn't really allowed herself to be challenged like she was back then. Sorata came along and cracked a hole in her very rigid & defined world, and she "progressed" into gaining agency by choosing to go to Tokyo with him because she wanted to.
She then hid that fact, never outright said it, and because of her natural talents and intelligence and beauty, became the darling of that school--and fell into old habits of passively being praised that I would argue mirrored her old life enough that she regressed again.

The problem though, is that Sorata was more involved in her life presently than before, so he suffered being seemingly sidelined even as they should have ostensibly "been here together". That's not precisely what happened, of course, but appearances and perceptions are what we have in making sense of the world, and Sorata's interpretation was justifiably that Miyuki was only in Tokyo to satisfy her grandfather's wishes, and not because of Sorata.

So maybe this is her finally starting to realize that what she thinks, isn't what other people are seeing/evaluating when it comes to her. In that light, her sudden question of "do Sorata and Ayano also think it's a waste [that I'm not choosing college/to apply myself]?" could be that shift in her thought process and how she herself has misread things from Sorata's point of view.

I might be going a bit too far with that analysis and guesswork, but it'd make sense if this is the turning point for Miyuki to make an effort to change herself, especially as it's off the back of potentially losing Sorata because of persistent misunderstandings and misconceptions.

I know the misunderstandings are kinda the entire plot. But it's not very interesting when one side knows that the other misunderstood them... and does nothing to correct that

I don’t really know why i started reading this series, considering how much i hate misunderstanding tropes
I dislike a lot of examples of the misunderstanding tropes in manga because typically authors don't know how to write a misunderstanding taking place without turning their characters into idiots, but in this story the misunderstandings are due to realistic reasons like personality conflicts and cultural differences that make it so the character writing doesn't suffer

oh, so… does Miyuki finally realize she actually has a lot of potential if she goes to university and continues her studies?. I’m honestly getting tired of seeing Miyuki’s older brother, how long is he gonna keep showing up in this arc? :haa:
