I'm trying my damnedest to think of one, but I've got nothing. The closest I can think of is Fuuka, but in that case there's just two girls with the name.

What do you mean? Honoka made absolute sense. She was there since the beginning. She was a friend who he hanged out with. The only issue is the story, that we're reading, didn't do much for her. It was like the Author made her strongest attribute to be "the childhood friend." Which is a disservice for his first love. Yes, she was nice and did a lot of nice things, but her presence was basically non-existent. This made this ship the weakest... by how the author wrote the story it wouldn't make sense that he sticks with her. What doesn't make sense is him not falling in love with Yoshino or even Kanna.

Personally, I like Kanna more because she put effort. Yoshino was there because that was his job, but they weren't friends out of a mutual understanding. Kanna built a friendly relationship on some really solid ground, and they friendship was pretty tight. It would not seem like a stretch if it didn't turn to romance. But he spent soooo much with Yoshino it would be ridiculous if the didn't fall for each other.

it does imply you would understand less than the others here who at least more than skimming every chapter though.

Meanwhile the MC figured out he was in love with Kusunoki more than half the series ago, tried to confess to her, went to her house repeatedly (including times when her parents weren't home), has gone on multiple in-all-but-name dates with her, and has actually had a kiss with her (albeit accidentally).

Frankly, Otobe has better chances with the MC than Hebikawa, and she's practically every "clear loser" trope rolled into one.
