He realized his mistake and summoned the bands because of it.
In the LN he holds her hand that's holding the spear to guide and support her attack. The lightning is herr own mana, so it wouldn't hurt her, but it would repel anyone else. The point was to keep other mana contamination to a minimum.
As a divine weapon, I want to believe that it has some aim assistance.
