"Bara" is pretty much bears because it is intended to be "Gay works for Gay Men", which was what the work it originated from had, as opposed to the standard yaoi which is more or less made by women for women.

I've never heard it used as a slur tbh. I mean the conversation doesn't come up very often in general, but whenever I hear about slurs being used against LGBT in Japan, that is not one that I've ever seen come up. I've even talked to gay people about it at a gay bar when I was in Japan in March, and they didn't seem to have any issue with it (or maybe they just view it as a gay person using a gay slur like we tend to in English and didn't comment on it).

Yeah, its like that. It's fine for gay men but not for non gay men. I still wouldn't use it since I would not want to hurt anyone's feelings.
