He wasn't fired, just demoted. Around that time anyways.

TheTopAdventure resigned and made Gao the new artist. (In practice, this meant @a_singular_strike was forced to design new CGs for the characters.)

To keep it short, Gao has basically become an assistant to every department except music (because no one but @medalion wants to help with music... )

As for the progress on the project?

Will we get it before GTA 6 is the real question. :02

i see... the internal drama seems more severe than i thought. well, at least i still have The Mangadex V(N)5 (which i've still not played) to tide me over until this new project is released.
