What kind of bizarre situation does Japan have? You can't just drive the car off the lot?

Well, Ichika is cute as always.

To the cafe owner's point, most wives historically had their first child in their late teens and were usually helped by the parents and community, which will definitely be the case since they all love her.

"I'd like this car"
"Thank you for your purchase"
"Can I take it home with me?"
"No"
"Why not?"
"Because delivery takes two weeks"
"But the car is right here"
"Two weeks"

Bro what? Just get one of your guys to valet it. It's not that hard.
That's the rule. Why does that rule exist? I don't know. Does the rule make sense? No. But it's the rule.

Yeah, if it's a used car (which I think they said it was...) then I can't imagine what would take two weeks. Do they have to send it somewhere for some kind of inspection first?

basically as far as I can tell, it takes the dealer around 2 weeks to finalise all the legal work and register the transfer of ownership etc

so its not actually your car until all of thats been handled and no issues have appeared.

Probably has to do with registration and such. Unless it's a big established dealer that can do everything in house including registration and transfer or issue of plates, they would need to go through the DMV (whatever the Japan equivalent is) for registration and plates. Seeing how this manga is based out in the "sticks", that most likely means the dealer probably has to goto the closest DMV which could be a all day job (going by bus and/or train [or driving] to a large city hours away), which would also mean they only do so one or two times a week.

2 WEEKS?, it literally took me around 15 min to do the paperwork. I wasted more time driving to the place than waiting for the paperwork.

Why is there so much focus on that cafe old man I wonder? He gets more importance than everybody else other than the main characters.

it really depends on the location and the norm for each country. lots of dealerships near where I live are all big franchises with in-house systems designed to automate everything. but older and more rural places tend to be solo operations and still require them reaching out to various other places the old fashioned way because they don't have the means to switch to the "modern" approach. our meeting might take only upto an hour to sign, but the timer keeps counting until its recorded with all the relavent people/places.

I know some places even with fast paperwork don't let people drive off same day due to past fraud incidents and others that decide it's easier to let you drive off as they will just send REPO to collect if a problem arises.

parts of japan are very modern but, wow when you experience the parts of japan that are still very old school is it a culture shock the first few times. got very patient after the first time I dealt with japan post ahahaha

yeah. I'm so used to ordering things now and seeing the tracker atleast leave the store for a post office by the next day and soon after continue on it's way. but when ordering something from tokyo japan smaller business it would take 2-3 days for the item to reach the post office and another 2-3 before it actually set off to be exported and that was airmail, when it didnt become slightly too heavy and find itself delivered by ship 😅 I really learned what patience was when I saw my delivery estimate go from 2 weeks to 3 months overnight ahahaha.

so it really doesn't shock me as much anymore when a few legacy experiences like this pop up from time to time. it's a wait, but its kinda nice to know that not yet everywhere is in a rush to chase the minutes and seconds of every day.

A cursory web search turns up the notable information that purchasing a privately-owned vehicle requires you to have a specific parking space for it within 2km of your place of residence — no curbside parking and you need to have proof of residence and the right/permission to use the space.

Amusingly, light vehicles like the kei/mini truck are often exempted from need for a parking certificate in rural areas.

Apparently it got something to do with registration system and other legal processes, which forces people to wait for weeks to get the car they brought.
