All in all, I always like these kinds of chapters so much. Really shows that despite all the advances from Dan and the pushes from Kinue and Noriko, nothing can replace the natural chemistry between Yamaoka and Kurita.

She already did. Dan is incompatible with her in every way. Money means nothing if there is nothing in common between them. Whereas Yamaoka have a lot in common with her, including their mutual love for food. That is why a lot of the elders shipped them together.

Also, to be fair, Yamaoka stopped betting on the ponies ages ago in the manga's timeline. I don't think he's placed a bet in like 15 volumes at least.

I think it's part of the author's plan all along to ensure there's enough drama in this manga's love triangle arc (a common complaint from all of us here who are reading the manga), by making Kurita as indecisive as possible when it comes to rejecting Dan's advances and Kinue and Noriko's continuous nagging on her to accept Dan's advances.

It's obvious that she has better chemistry with Yamaoka from the start, but I believe the author wanted to make some drama out of it, unfortunately resulting in this dilly-dally and indecisiveness of a triangle love drama that lasted many volumes.

Money really, really isn't everything. And as for being humble, Dan really doesn't have as much of that as you seem to think. He kept the Ultimate vs. Supreme challenges going purely because he wanted an opportunity to romance Kurita, and in the Salmon Showdown he used Yamaoka's mistake with the raw salmon as an excuse to try kicking him off the project. Yamaoka may have a lot of character flaws, but he's genuinely earnest, has no pretensions, and in this very chapter worked his ass off to get Kurita something special to help her heal. Hell, Chapter 276 saw him helping both of Kurita's other love interests think of meaningful gifts to give her during her recovery. They've always worked way better together, and that's a fact.
