I went into this series expecting a humans vs aliens story. Instead, it looks like it's primarily going to be a humans vs humans story at first, which shows how this infighting is why the Aliens were able to win by the time they arrived.

Funnily enough, many sci-fi stories have an apocalypse hinted to be started by Aliens in order to clear Earth for colonization. Everything from the Walking Dead (space spores) and possibly State of Decay 1 and 2 (although that might be secret government experiments gone wrong), to the Fallout series, with Fallout 3 and 76 adding credibility to the idea that the Zetan Aliens did what they did to take over after humans were wiped out.

Fallout in particular has credible evidence that Aliens started the nuclear war to make humans finish each other off. With Fallout 3 and 76 proving that as advanced as Zetans were, humanity's technology was enough to fight them off in a ground war as their war technology was better, but not by a lot.

Chances are, the "aliens" in this are liable to be mutations of research on Mother Swan.
