Now we know dragons aren't extinct or critically endangered. Not only that, we also know dragons aren't one species, there are multiple of them. Also, there are elemental dragons. And two are in beef with each other, until "the land split in two".
The fire dragons are interesting, because they have characteristics similar to that of bees and/or ants. For example, a queen. Crazy that there are HUNDREDS of them. What's even more crazy is that THEY CAN BREATHE FIRE.
As for the water dragons, the way they use their powers is by "cloaking" themselves in water, kinda like wearing clothes. As for using it in combat, we don't know (for now). Maybe they shoot it like a water jet, or showering it like a rain.
Also, it's vaguely shown that Shinsui (Hekidou's mom) is a water dragon. I mean, there's some scenes where she swims in water. But we were never shown her using her powers.
Also, the red tomboy dragon lady in volume 6's cover might do something to our boy Hekidou. Poor guy can't catch a break. First, the snake lady, then his LITERAL MOM, now her? Can't he just be with Hakurei in peace?
Now this arc is getting interesting...

Elder changing the subject
So the fire dragons are probably going to invade and the herbivores in this land are about to find out how disastrous it's going to be. Minerva being made the elder without proper life experience like the current elder probably will create an even more insular environment despite her interest in the outside. I don't think she'll accept but who knows

Maybe it was a female fire dragon that tried to eat him when he hatched? Well, looking at the new volume cover, it looks like he's going to meet the queen fire dragon, it seems. This is an interesting series, sort of fucked up in numerous ways, though. I really hate the toxic yuri crap between the female bird and the dragon, mostly because it affected her relationship with her brother and other dead brother. That part both pisses me off and disgusts me. I hope the bro can eventually just live freely with his wifey and soon-to-come kids but I'm worried with how this author handles things that they may just killed them off
