Every time I see this stupid ass bullshit “would you like to buy a slave?” shit I am reminded of that one japanese twitter argument where the guy legitimately goes “I would buy a slave to respect their culture”.

Like what the fuck. There is genuinely no fucking way that you can convince me that a well-adjusted person from the modern era would eagerly participate in the system of slavery.
Define "well-adjusted", then. Adjusted to what? Most isekai protagonists are not well-adjusted people within their own society and neither are the people arguing online about slavery in isekai, no matter which side of the argument they are on.
Considering the amount of fucked up things I've heard people on the "moral" side of things or people considered to be decent, upstanding members of society say, both online and in real life, and how little respect they have for the life of other people, or even the concept of life itself, I wouldn't be surprised if participating in the system of slavery is the least controversial thing a "well-adjusted person from the modern era" would do when given the chance and necessary power to do so.

That said, I'm tired of this trope, too. Not because of the moral implications, though, but just because it's so prevalent and a lazy way to introduce new characters.

newgen already malding over the slavery trope will never get old.
As an oldgen, I'll say the "good guys" constantly buying and owning slaves now is a newish development.

This was really fucking abnormal until the success of Shield Hero made owning a slave (and especially a child slave) a standard part of the Isekai wish list.

Is this gonna be the obligatory "slavery isn't really bad!" trope? How long until the loli harem member I wonder
I read a really shitty one that claimed that slavery was great because the slaves didn't want freedom and if you gave the slaves the ability to choose they wouldn't know what to do.

Well, in all honesty, the majority of isekai'ed mcs are far from being "good guys"... in most cases they are personification of seven deadly sins. Even if it was not original intention, the Isekai genre (d)evolved into male ego masturbation and persistently stayed here.

Second, if you want to blame someone, you should blame 'Isekai Meikyuu de Harem o', because Imho that's the root of all evil.

Once upon a time, isekai'd MCs were normal dudes yanked into strange and terrible situations who just want to go home. Subaru of Re:Zero is basically the last gasp of that.

Mushoku Tensei marked the start of "no going back isekai", and then all of the bad copies of Mushoku Tensei shifted entirely into childish power trips.

Isekai Meikyuu de Harem O is obviously niche fetish stuff, and there's no pretense of the MC being a decent man.

Shield Hero actually went mainstream, and I've have seen "Naofumi buys Raphtalia" recreated beat for beat in so much junk now.

Somewhere along the way, Naofumi doing something terrible (buying a child explicitly to use as cannon fodder) because he'd hit rock bottom somehow became "the best girlfriend is one you purchase and groom yourself."

Which is super fucked.

Hmmm, if you ask me, Subaru from RE:Zero is satire of the isekai trope (and he is not alone), mainly because Japanese authors are actually well aware how degenerate the genre has become.
The thing with Mushoku Tensei is that it treated the whole reincarnation as a second chance and rehab therapy, which all the bad copies promptly ignore and focus on (un)deserved rewards for MC.
Now, the reason I brought Isekai Meikyuu de Harem O is because there is clear shift. In your words, when Naofumi buys Raphtalia, it's because he is desperate and she is necessary 'tool', but when Michio buys Roxanne, it's because she is trophy (wife). So, with one big leap, the trope went from 'necessary evil' to 'convenient'. The difference is even more apparent when you compare the portrayal of slave traders in those stories. And obviously, the following authors caught onto that, so we ended up in our current situation, where there is no need for MC to search and conquer his perfect waifu, he 'just' needs to buy her on the market. (and if I were feeling particularly evil, I would remark that it fits perfectly our real world, but I'll refrain from doing that....)

P.S. The "the best girlfriend is one you purchase and groom yourself" sentiment is actually pretty ancient, ref. to Genji Monogatari.

Why is that your root of all evil?
See above.

Japan really has a thing for having their MCs eagerly participate in human trafficking while still pretending that they're upstanding people afterwards.

I don't object to an MC buying slaves; I object to an MC buying slaves and then the writer insisting that the MC is still a decent person.
It's that or she goes to someone worse. You can hate the fact that mcs do contribute to it.

And then forget the fact that they are still slaves and can go to someone worse, which is the reason it happens so much because most mcs save them from that.

Considering that most of the MCs in these stories are unstoppable gods, them even playing along with human traffickers is a sick joke.

Edit: Can you fucking imagine a Green Lantern coming across a slave market and just telling the human traffickers to have a nice day? That's usually the sort of power level we're looking at for Isekai protags.

It's so fucked that joining the Epstein class is an integral part of the current day isekai power fantasy

I am not going to “both sides” the concept of enslaving people being reprehensible by every metric known to man and the divine.

If a narrative makes a point of their MC being a goodhearted, “normal” person, immediately turning around & having him participate in the system of stripping sentient beings of their personhood compromises either the MC’s character or the integrity of the story.

It’s an extremely popular trope because the wish fulfillment requires designating women who are “safe” to fall in love with because they are not allowed to say no. It’s disgusting, lazy writing, and just generally chauvinist.

You're going to drop this series, then, right?
