There was that final line saying next chapter they connect or something but this whole manga until recently has been a bait so there's always a chance.

Unless this is happening at different points in time it's hard to see Sakura calling him and interrupting the moment.

Because, like Sakura (even if not as far as she was with the director) felt guilt over not telling her.

So it could be that because he didn't clarify that matter, they somehow knew about it and he didn't explain what happened.

That or it's just an inconsistent writing moment..
