Well... i admit that the revenge was kinda satisfactory... but the novel, and the manga, veer too much into wish fulfillment.
What makes you feel that way? Which version of Jinsei Gyakuten, web novel or manga? Please don't mistake this for sarcasm. I genuinely want to know what I might have missed.
IMHO, the story is really well-written with a great balance. They combine romcom and investigation thriller together by switching between genres in order to compare between the growth of the MC and FMC and their companions and the steady decline of all villains.
The web novel has reached chapter 302 and the revenge arc has already concluded.
As for the manga, the latest release is only chapter 10.1 which corresponds to just chapter 26 of the web novel. At this rate of adaptation, it would take the manga ten years to reach chapter 300!
Spoilers about the last boss (shown the story is well written) :
She is the president of the literature club that the MC belonged to and has been a FWB of the soccer playboy since their previous school. Only ten students transferred from that school so very few people know that the two of them have been causing trouble since junior high. Among those ten are two of their victims : one who seeks revenge to help the MC because they've the same suffered treatment and a woman whose life was ruined by them.
One thing the writing handles well is that we don't feel sorry for any of the soccer playboy's victims. Everyone including the MC's girlfriend knows exactly what kind of person he is from the start. Yet they still choose to play with fire. Because he is charming, handsome, wealthy, and a truly gifted national-level athlete. The kind of man women dream of sleeping with at least once. Even the final boss manages to manipulate a girl in the club into attacking the MC using a promise of another sleep with the soccer playboy (they have to do her a dirty job before getting that chance)!
The MC's girlfriend also knows she plays with fire. Her plan is to enjoy a fling with the soccer playboy secretly till he graduate (Feb next year) then return to be a good girlfriend with MC. However, the MC discovered the truth (Aug this year), ruining her plan. Then she had made a mistake by choosing the playboy driven by their sexual pleasure and had gone too far by conspiring to frame the MC. All because she didn't want other people to know she had cheated on the MC.
The only woman who rejects him is the FMC! So, the soccer playboy was furious at a photo of FMC and MC prior to the friendly match. As a result, right after the match, he called the MC's girlfriend to take his frustration but also dug his own grave by getting photographed both before entering a love hotel and after being arrested by the police. These photos were the key leading to the suspicion that the MC might have been framed by the soccer playboy and his girlfriend to cover up their infidelity. The plot unfolds logically without forced and stupid writing seen in Grapara by Airi Katsura (sensei). LOL
The MC is a truly good person who has no desire for revenge but he cooperates with the FMC to eliminate the
final boss just to prevent future victims, knowing well that he and his friends have already suffered that fate. He realizes if he doesn't stop her, others will meet the same end.
This makes for another clever storytelling because the MC "never" acts anything for himself. He "always" do anything for the sake of others. So, the author pushes the MC to revenge with a good reason.
The reason why the last boss targeted the MC is also rational. The last boss is a talented novelist who has won numerous awards but the MC is in another level, he's a genius! So she became consumed by a mix of envy and a desire to possess him. Her initial plan was to use her feminine charms to seduce him (she is described as having a cute appearance) but before she could succeed the MC confessed his love and entered a relationship. So, she shifted her plan from possession to destruction. She encouraged the soccer playboy to steal the MC's girlfriend aiming to leave him so devastated that he would lose the heart to write a novel forever. And her plan is to destroy the MC on his birthday! It was a coincidence that the MC discovered it himself.
So, she deserves to be the last boss but she made the mistake of trying to handle everything alone relying on puppets to follow her plan. In contrast, the FMC is smarter and works as teams to take her down.
