The outcome was obvious from the instant she called Shimamura, but it's still rough to see. And Shimamura's reaction was definitely the correct one ultimately despite her uncertainty.
I mean, what can you possibly say to someone who just had their heart broken in front of you ? Silence is probably the best treatment you can give them, because any gesture or word, no matter how thoughtful, is likely to make the other person feel even worse. All you can hope for is that time will heal the wound, and that the two of them will be able to talk together again as equals eventually.

I really like how this manga approaches these topics, because, as exaggerated as it may seem, some people are just bad with emotions. Either bad at expressing them like Shimamura, or bad at keeping them in check, like Adachi. It's realistic, and very common with neurodivergent people.

I love how awkward and realistic this was. Usually in yuri the childhood friend would have put down a challenge to adachi and then dramatically declared her love for shimamura. This was so painful to read, like I was witnessing Tarumi go further and further into the danger zone with every clumsy clue that she had a crush. And I didn't even like Tarumi. Feel bad for her now though and so little was even said. Really well done.

I get you really gotta be careful with your words and actions during a moment like this lest u dig the knife deeper but.......
LIKE TRY TO COMFORT HER ALITTLE 😭 😭 😭 Poor Tarumi...
Nah, doing anything like that would make Tarumi hate herself more! Think about it, you confessing to the person you like, then getting rejected, only to being comforted by the same person.. all of this is because of your action.. And it can cause mixed signals, especially in that state.. This coldness from Shimura helps Tarumi to move on.

There's nothing Shimamura could say that wouldn't "twist the knife".

Cold silence really was the only answer, as Shimamura said herself. Nothing else, no matter how kind the thought, or compassionate the intention, would have done anything but reiterate what Tarumi already knew, and voicing it aloud--in any manner, at all--would make it real.

And that realness would be like death.

Tarumi will recover. Nothing in this world lasts forever, whether it be the most sought-after sensation, or the most reviled occurrence, or the bleakest despairing emotion. Her heart will break today, and it will be broken tomorrow, and it will hurt a year from now. And every time she awakens to daylight, the wound will close over a little more, as time and distance and other people enter and exit her life, just like Shimamura. Almost none of them will be as important, but at least one of them will give Tamuri a moment to forget, if even a little.

But if Shimamura speaks, or touches her, or acknowledges this heartbreak, there's the risk that she does the worst thing possible: give Tamuri hope. And then that process of moving forward is delayed, and that isn't fair to either of them.

Shimamura's silence is a kindness, if a cold one.

And this here is one of the good ways you handle triangles.
Take on their awkwardness, on difficulty to really deal with and not hurt someone. Instead of passing it as comic relief, or waltzing around it forever like many other mangas like to do and never resolving them. In the process, it even makes a clearly-not-the-interest a sympathetic character as well instead of clingy side chara trope that people dislike

Yeah, last chapter made me realize just how much I love this story, but this chapter made me realize why it might be in my top five manga/LN I've ever read, full stop. You just don't get inner narration or philosophical musings like this. Many a series will take itself entirely too seriously, or treats these moments as comedy, or Hallmark melodrama.

Shimamura's way of thinking about the world and herself and those souls in her life is something that should be taught to people. Being this in-tune with your brain and your heart feels like it could help many, many, many lives, from where I'm sitting--and this from someone who's spent decades trying to sort out the storms in their own head and chest.

I feel deeply for Tarumi, but I applaud them both in this moment. This is one of those quiet things that feels so small and transient, and yet anyone in this situation would likely tell you it's the hardest thing they've had to do...whether you're in Tarumi's position or Shimamura's. So to see it handled so thoughtfully and so lovingly here by the author and the artist, is beautiful.

Tarumi's unrequited love ended before it could begin. Seeing it wither slowly in the background and ultimately die in this chapter was an inevitable, and heartbreaking end to witness.

Its been a while since I remember this topic about Tarumi which finally ended but like
Why did they separate again as friends? Just feels kinda weird how you where best friends as children then 5-10 years later of no talking you finally meet again and the first thing you finally do when you meet them is "I love you"?

I'd get it if they where talking long distance all this time but I don't think they where? So to some degree I just find it sorta shocking you'd hold love for this person for all these years, like you didn't meet anyone else during her absence to be super bffs? Find some other girl that you wanted to date/love instead?

Either way rip Tarumi, your love was bitter sweet :aquadrink:

Also I liked how Tarumi still had somewhat the courage to even attempt to tell someone you too loved them, lots of people don't do that :nyoron:

Man, I am hard Adachi x Shimamura shipper but this really hurt my soul and heart. Worst thing is that she didn't do anything wrong, she was just late for the train that has already started going to it's destination.

Hopefully they will stay good friends with Shimamura and even had a great time in future with both of them.

Oh Tarumi.
You just know a part of her is going to think "If only I'd confessed first!" for the rest of her life.

But really I think Shimamura's line on pg 24 sums it up the best. Adachi would sooner die than say something like "Let's stay friends" she'd go all out constantly.
Shimamura's type is clingy girls I think, and Tarumi just doesn't fit.

The perspective of this manga has always been Shimamura's, with the occasional glimpse into Adachi's inner world, the audience naturally adopted Shimamura's view the moment Tarumi was introduced. Now confirmed that Shimamura prefers Adachi, the writing was on the wall from the start. All-in-all, the audience could see the outcome already, and Shimamura actually sensed it first without even fully realising it until Tarumi's "confession".
