he tries to play off the moves he makes, saying it's for some other innocuous reason, not because he wants contact, intimacy, to show he likes her.
But he always walks that back and admits the real reason. Because he wants contact, intimacy, to progress their relationship, because he likes her.
That's how you write compelling romance with a tsundere-coded character. And it's why these two work so well, why their dynamic is so fun to read, and why this series is so successful in portraying the sort of relationship at play here.
