"Everyone will not just". It gives people real advantage, not many people will give it away for vague reasons like "destroying this planet".
Also AI isn't tied to corporations, you have a lot of stuff you can host yourself.
And? Many people are greedy and selfish. Reasoning like that is why we have so many problems in this world. Justifying their actions by saying "well everyone does it" helps nobody.

Also, while you may be able to self host smaller, more precise AI models on your own, that is a different discussion. We are talking about LLMs, namely Google's Gemini. Most of the problems I have with AI, and the models that the majority of people use are inherently linked to massive corporations like Google, Meta, and OpenAI.

If you don't want reddit snark don't go full reddit keyboard warrior with the "enlightened brave and realistic" opinion
you don't understand, the difference is that i'm right and he's wrong

There may be no putting AI as a concept back in it's Pandora's Box so to speak, but we as the public ultimately determine how it will be implimented. I'd much rather AI be used for it's actual useful niches in coding support and medical applications than the GenAI bullshit that's destroying this planet. We CAN mitigate it's damage but only if we act collectively against it and don't bend the knee to the corpos.

Having this mentality is like being opposed to global pollution, then littering and saying "everyone else does it so why shouldn't I?".
i'm aware you mean well and care that AI's implementation doesn't go unchecked, but i'm sorry to say that all that about 'the public determining its implementation' and 'collective action' is not how things will play out. people spend their time and money on good products, and insofar as future AI-affected products are good/have a competitive edge, they'll be bought. the public at large is not going to boycott AI 'on principle' or anything like that.

as for the pollution metaphor, if one of your gripes with AI is the energy it requires then that's a separate conversation entirely.

Answer #1: Don't use Google. It's garbage these days, anyway.

Answer #2: Use Ublock Plus's element picker to manually pick and disable the AI elements.

So you basically have no solution to your perceived problem, except trying to appeal to collective with rather vague ethics/environmental points, asking them to stop using something giving them real advantage, that other people will be using to surpass them.
This worked exactly 0 times in human history

Oh yeah my bad, I forgot that I was talking to the font of all knowledge.

Of course the public won't give up AI based on principles. Most people are simply too busy to care. That's why it is the duty of those who are truly invested to convince them otherwise.

And no the pollution that AI causes is inextricably linked to this discussion. As the use of AI requires vast quantities of energy consumption and harvesting of data to continue to function. What reasoning do you have to say otherwise?

As for the success of my ideals? It doesn't matter. Will I succeed? Maybe. Probably not. But unlike you I'd rather die standing than live kneeling.

I don't know about that one. Many people have given up far more than you ever have in pursuit of a better livelihood for themselves and others.

The American Revolution? Or hell, any revolution ever? The first practitioners of germ theory? Slavery abolitionists? The list goes on.

some people seriously don’t hate generative ai enough

Some people don't want to put in the work to develop a talent, believe generative Ai is the solution and are ready to ignore the slop just to say they've "created" something. It's not really surprising, also it seems that the only people who have made money with it are the ones selling courses on how to make money with it, all big Ai corpos are in the red with the exception of the ones selling the hardware/shovels.

Same argument, or variation of it, can be used against: some of the advanced photoshop features, image manipulation software in general, drawing tablets, CAD software, CGI, synthesizers, auto mode in cameras, digital cameras overall, cameras overall, printing press, even whole act of writing if we want to go that far. Probably far more, and i focused only on more creative fields.
There is benefit from things that have human touch - painted portrait instead of a photo, handwritten letter instead of an email, but usually it will be emotional one.
There has always been a market for more traditional media, and good artists have always managed to survive the changes. Good artists - and IMO the ones that are threatened by AI the most are ones that are producing slop anyway.
Who cares that radio will play slop songs created by AI instead of slop songs created by another run of the mill mass produced pop star? Who cares that erotica about werevolves and minotaurs will be written by AI? Who cares that furries are able to generate their own porn instead of paying someone to draw anthropomorphic blue fox, green dragon and a camel engaging in a very specific combination of 3 fetishes instead of paying someone $200 per image?

Is ignoring a problem solving it? Just because some people can overcome AI doesn't change the fact that other people fall for AI and accept it. I hate when the mentality is “just be glad you can see what’s wrong with AI” since I wish everyone can see the massive problem ai causes. But this idea is heavily unrealistic sadly and there will always be someone out there affected by AI

But i (and many other people) don't see a problem with AI. I will agree that some of the implementation is wrong - i wouldn't like to live next to massive data center for example - but i don't see a single problem with the technology itself and it's widespread usage.

Depends on what I'm looking for. A recipe or historical event I only remember vague facts about? Spot on. A current event, meme from 10 years ago, or a song that has 1000 views or less? Schizo hallucinations fueled by a conglomerate of vaguely related reddit post
This is pretty accurate lol
Tbh usually I ended up searching for reddit posts about questions anyways even before this so it's not THAT different (it does come up with some truly ridiculous stuff sometimes tho)
