Depends on what I'm looking for. A recipe or historical event I only remember vague facts about? Spot on. A current event, meme from 10 years ago, or a song that has 1000 views or less? Schizo hallucinations fueled by a conglomerate of vaguely related reddit post

In my experience google's search went bad way before they ever introduced the AI overview. It just stopped finding stuff which I was looking for, or just found sporadic results between numerous unrelated and irrelevant ones. It heavily favoured certain websites in its results and ignored others.

the main reason i've welcomed the AI overview is exactly this. maybe around 5 years ago there was a HUGE decline in search quality. i used to be able to instantly find the exact info i was looking for 90%+ of the time, now i'm lucky if some random redditor has asked the same question before and it's been answered.

So they made it suck, then introduced crap to make it seem better.
Thats like jacking up a product's price by 300% then having a "50% off sale!".

it's not crap though. it'll find the exact part of a video i need for me by scrubbing through the vid's transcript. yes it's not perfect, and yes i'd certainly prefer that google search itself be as functional as it was 10 years ago, but i'm not going to throw out the baby with the bathwater just because recoiling at everything AI is in vogue.

Once it costs them enough ad revenue whilst not making any money, it'll become much easier to turn off.
