This actually makes sense. Following Tohno who is lead along often, and easily catches feelings (but tries to deny them to protect himself) we assume Houjou is juxtaposed as someone who romantically likes him. However, it actually makes more sense from her perspective to have liked him platonically (unless something happened between them before the story started). At quite an old age Urara becomes Houjou's first (and possibly only) friend, and Houjou starts coming out of her shell. She seems to be acting friendly to a seat mate while being her weird self. Since Tohno accepts this and reciprocates she thinks yay friend. At the same time she's been catching feelings throughout the series, but that wasn't really the case at the start and she's kinda too dumb to hide her feelings anyway.

Pretty disheartening if this whole time she wasn't that much more interested in him than that. Would've been one hell of a black pill for poor mc...

And here I'm thinking she's also just responding to the fact her knees are blushing.

I would go hu? Too

Yep, the fact that the earring was into her pocket all along is in retrospective expected from Houjou lol

Also, WAIT WHAT !? BISH JUST REALIZED NOW THAT SHE'S TOTALLY CRUSHING ON HIM FROM THE BEGINNING !? ... Actually, that's something I can expect from her too lol

Ok, finally some progress.

Now, the main issue of the plot is not even resolved yet so we can expect the author to pull some unnecessary misunderstanding drama?

For the splash page “You’re… // …fine just the way you are.” some accompanying music:
I promise it’s not a rickroll. But here’s one for the mentally depraved.

What always strikes me as odd for these romance stories is how many people denounce the romantically afflicted as dense or dumb or simple, while it makes much more sense to assume them to be naive and inexperienced in romance. At least for middle/high school stories, where the MCs are usually falling in love for the first time. They may have had infatuations previously (but this would be rare or from a side character PoV), but from the inside, falling in love for the first time, is really hard to figure out. There’s no notification for the sidegrade from platonic to romantic friend, no heart emojis popping, no flowery framing; you’re fumbling in the dark and trying to fit wood shapes into holes like a blind toddler, except now the shapes and holes have changed and no one told you and you have to figure it out all by yourself.

All that is to say, Tohno only now noticing her heart rate going up when she thinks of Youta(’s smile) is utterly unsurprising and believable. This is her first rodeo.
