Sure, Hito's stay has gone on long enough for them to assume their biology and Hito's is roughly similar, plus those familiar will him will be familiar with his ...effluvia. But for something as high stakes as a court case, basing your decision on the assumption an alien's biology will produce the same scents as you would is kinda dodgy.

Also, the sweet potato thing was odd to me at first since animals aren't all capable of eating the same thing. But it turns out that sweet potatoes can be eaten by a large variety of animals... However, the test still has the issue of not all animals being able to fart, like sloths and bats.
