Well I wondered in 54.2 if Hebi had a plan B for when plan A went wrong. And kinda! "Kick 'em in the balls" is a catchall sort of plan that doesn't always work, but it did here. And it's not a long term solution, hence her current fear. "Kick 'em in the balls and run" doesn't work when they know where you live.

Seeing Hebi realize she got in too deep, and get scared, is an interesting moment. A crossroads. Watching her think about who she can call for help, and realize "not my mom. Better call that boy I tease" feels like an L for her. Yeah, your life is a wreck, but some of that is your own decisions. And then watching her surprise when the boy she teases actually steps up for her? That's more sad than anything. It's like thinking the waitress is flirting, when it's her job to be friendly and polite to you. Hebi is a lonely creature who doesn't respect the people around her.

This chapter looks like character growth on the surface, but when you take a closer look, nothing has really changed.

Yes, Hebikawa called Keisuke for support. Yes, she's starting to realize she's developing feelings for him. Yes, Keisuke offered to be there for her. On the surface, all of that feels like progress.

But here's what's still missing: she hasn't abandoned her original plan. She hasn't thought, "I was wrong to think about using him." She hasn't realized that everything she's been doing so far has been wrong. At her core, nothing about her character has actually changed.

And let's not forget that she got herself out of a dangerous situation that she created. She knew exactly what kind of person she was dealing with. Keisuke had already stopped him once before. She admitted she knew he was a predator. Even so, she still chose to meet him, deliberately provoke him, and then coldly drop the act. Luckily, she got out unscathed.

Calling someone when you're scared is a moment of vulnerability. It isn't the same thing as growth. You can develop feelings for someone and still use them. You can trust someone in one moment and still manipulate them in the next.

Right now, Hebikawa is simply someone who had a frightening experience and turned to the person she felt safest with. That's not character growth. That's a natural emotional reaction.

Real growth would mean recognizing that what she was doing was wrong, taking responsibility for it, and changing her behavior. None of that has happened yet. Her feelings may be new, but her plan is still there. Her worldview is still there. The fundamental conflict driving her character is still there.

I think a lot of readers will treat this as though she's already changed, when in reality she hasn't even begun to. This chapter sets up the possibility of growth, but it isn't the growth itself.

The reason is simple: that's not what Hebikawa's character arc is about. If this were Kusunoki, whose arc revolves around self-understanding, an emotional realization like this could count as growth. But Hebikawa's arc is about accountability. It's about whether she'll recognize the harm she's causing, both to others and to herself, take responsibility for it, and choose to change. Until that happens, she hasn't grown. She's just had a moment.

The crazy thing about all of this is that snake really only had 1 option cuz keisuke would be wayy better than involving kusunoki in it. Ik she didn't exactly change due to the fact she still cared for what her mom would say. When as you said it's mostly self inflicted. Those 2 are the main way she changes and has a true character arc. As everything she's known keeps being challenged by them.

Also I'm glad keisuke wasn't suddenly there by coincidence but at the same time. I would like for hebikawa to understand what she made him feel for awhile, just so she understands how wrong she was to keep making him uncomfortable.

I have to say im happy with this outcome
She didn't get saved by Keisuke physically but she did get saved by Keisuke in the heart which feels more natural
He really is the only real person she can talk to about these matters which really adds to their relationship
I really hope this leads to her being more honest with her feelings overall

For Hebikawa if someone showed compassion to her she'd probably view them as having some type of ulterior motive
In her eyes Keisuke has already revealed his true colors to her by showing his genuine fear/dislike to her earlier in the story
There's nothing else to hide from her
So any interactions they do have it's usually 100% honest feelings
So for her it's probably the first time she felt like someone was genuinely concerned about her

Hebikawa, on the other hand, is seen as more complex, more interesting, and better written. Because of that, a lot of people think she's the better match for Keisuke. The irony is that Hebikawa's "complexity" comes largely from her flaws, but some readers treat those flaws as depth rather than dysfunction.
