I have a pretty wellspread last name in Sweden (but still uncommon enough its not around me all the time, like I'm not a Andersson.) Heck, its spread across the world. I would NOT give some random dude who comes to my door with my last name the time of day.

Heck, my neighbour has my last name and we are NOT related. Ancestry doesnt even track (we DID ask, heh), my family stems from Belgium as Walloons (Belgian-romanis, essentially.) and theirs do not. We just have the same name and thats more often how it goes.

I suppose its easier to fall for the scam in like the 80's and with Japan being smaller, still...baffling lil scam, essentially since he goes in with the pitch of " US KURITAAAS ARE WELLOFF AND QUITE SUCCESSFUL, YES YES. WE LEAAAD THE VERILY GOVERNMENT IN OUR WAAAAYS. Now may I trouble you country bumpkin Kuritas for 500$ each? "

Also like I'm not sure what the...lesson..is? " Know someone who has a chestnut tree orchard instead of buying storebought stuff. "

Gee, I guess I'll get right on that.

Page 19 has Yamaoka sorta repeating himself a number of times in the last panel.

My last name is also quite common here in the United States (It's in the top 50 most common last names) and there's no way I'm related to all of them, especially since my name has both English and Scottish ancestry.

As for the scams, people fall for them all the time for any number of reasons, so I guess it's understandable.

As for the lesson, it's really more Kariya's anti-imported food thing rearing up again. Chestnuts are common all over the world. It's one item that is in abundance in America, Europe, and Asia. His thing is he wants Japanese stores to sell Japanese chestnuts. He has a somewhat nationalistic attitude towards food, even while appreciating different cuisines. He seems to think that the more local the food, the better.

I think where I clash with him there isnt so much local food itself. Support your local farmers and orchards, I 100% agree as a mantra.

BUT....Kariya pretty much goes " ONLY buy local and or pesticide free food...or trust a store if its real specific one. "

Thing is....ok, I wanna tell yall somethin about Sweden. Gothemburg and Stockholm are both in some ways sea connected. Gothem through..being legit next to it, and Stockholm via the archepelago. KEY EMPHASIS.

No matter how well you fish or how early, that fish in Stockholm wont hit the fishmongers or someones plate atleast 24 hours after getting caught cus it has to be moved, you need to get the boat back and forth and so on.

Gothemburg, the fish can be sold the same morning the boat goes out. My point is....some places, even with modern (much more modern than the 80's) tech, CANT get actual fresh fish/produce early or at all from some places because of range or other reasons. Soil, weather etc etc

Kariya never really asks himself or the audience " These locals can do it, but I live in Okinawa and these are Hokkaido localities. What should I do instead as a replacement? Okinawa doesnt grow(blank) but what would work as well? " Like, it is interesting that he is both...openly not that knowledgeable on food, he has said as much...and also so stubborn and nationalistic at times that like...dude, if you are gonna keep bringing up these topics, you kinda DO need to be a expert.

Oh, I agree. His stance boils down to only eat what’s hyper local to you. Like, if it were the case, I’d never be able to eat seafood (I suppose river food since we do have three rivers here) But like, I’d never get to have lobster. It’s a really naive stance.

Speaking of seafood (and Gothemburg)

I wanna share a lil wiki link AND a video (all of it is worth a watch, but the part I'm sharing it for goes from the start to 7:20ish. (It has Eng subtitles you can put on, basically they go to the spot in the wiki link)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feskekôrka

Feskekörka ISNT the only fishmarket in Sweden obviously, Stockholm has several, but if I were to name one that gives you that sort of..open air (whilst being indoors, heh) vibe of Japanese fishmarkets, thats the one.

Interestingly, Swedish sushi restaurants dont tend to be too adventurous? They tend to be good quality, but if you say...go for nigiri? Shrimp, salmon, grilled salmon, salmon thats been brushed with beet (Looks like tuna) and tuna itself tends to be the options. Crabfish at times, avocado obviously. Tofupockets.... I know ONE spot in my town with more options and they do a bit of grilled eel too. I guess its cus we only want sushi fresh as we can picture it, most spots go for safe, tried and true and moreso EASY to get, toppings. Like if any sushi spot in Swedish has proper Omakase options (like Bream, halibut, etc etc) ..It IS the coasts...or Stockholm and Gothemburg as established. It wont be....I dunno, a landlocked place in....Växjö.

Idk why the author is so mega nationalistic sometimes, never bother asking the "is it available?" and "for what price". And japanese products are well known to be insanely overpriced. I have eaten better norwegian salmon at one fifth of the price of the omasake ones

Okay so I'm not sure about the Japanese monarchy at the time of this chapter coming out, but you can't just say your family name is ruling Japan when there's an actual ruling monarchy at the time and they don't have a last name to their house, I'm sorry but when I read his Kurita family scam act, it feels like "Dude that's just straight up treason you're speaking about to act like your family name means anything cuz its members work in high powerful positions in the country, hell straight up saying the family is ruling Japan is a huge offense to the current monarchy cuz they don't even have a last name"

Also as a Vietnamese who has the most common last name in the country, Nguyen, it's laughable cuz the same last name doesn't mean blood, it is just a name, it's actually how the monarchy used to solidfy their status here, to take the powers back from the old ruling house of the country, by making their last name a common one for every household in the country, which are obviously the major populace and yes, the last dynasty of Vietnam is the Nguyen dynasty, hence why it is the most common last name, it changed with each new dynasty and that has been happening for centuries I believe

The "Kurita Gets Roped Into High Treason" Arc was too spicy to put into print.

I don't think it meant literally ruling, more like saying, "Look how important and big the family is!"

This is quite common in Asia, the extended family makimg organization for the family because the family has ties to important figure

My extended family is one of it because we have comnection to old king or something. Well, my family is expelled though from the organization because my grandfather is a commoner who doesn't have ties to important figures

I knew something was bullshit when he brought up Tokugawa Ieyasu, I know enough history to know that it was nonsense. It totally became obvious it was fraud when money came up.

I knew it was bullshit when he mentioned that Shigeru Yoshida was originally a Kurita. I am pretty up on my post-war Japanese political history. The only reason I didn't add a TL note was because it's revealed that he was bullshitting anyway.
